Description: Cooperativa Cañera de San Ramón R.L. (COOPECAÑERA R.L.) is a cooperative located in San Ramón de Alajuela, that plants and industrializes sugarcane. The main market for their sugar is the domestic market, but the cooperative started to export directly to Europe in the year 1997, when the cooperative was certified by FLO for providing the fair-trade market. Since then exports have increased rapidly. This year 2008, Coopecañera is going to deliver more than 1.000 t white sugar cane under fairly conditions to Europe. Theses exports to the fair-trade conditions have allowed the cooperative to strengthen its share capital as well as the recognition of a preferential price for its associated small farmers.

Coopecañera is the smallest white sugar cooperative in Costa Rica, producing around 5,000 tons per year. It is developing an organic production program.
